This isn’t much notice, I realise, but tomorrow at 5p.m. Film 4 is showing the Merchant/Ivory adaptation of E. M. Forster’s A Room with a View, starring Helena Bonham Carter, Maggie Smith, Simon Callow, Daniel Day Lewis, etc., etc. Worth watching for the skinny-dipping scene alone – which is a joy – but also replete with beautiful music, scenery and performances.
Then, at the same time on Thursday, Film 4 is showing the magnificent classic film version of Charlotte Brontë’s novel Jane Eyre, with Orson Welles as Mr Rochester and Joan Fontaine in the title role.
So set the Sky+ (or, if such things still exist, the video).
Oliver Parker’s Dorian Gray – based on the Oscar Wilde novel – also opens at cinemas this week. It looks rather good I think, but, of course, you should never judge a film by its trailer. Ben Barnes and Colin Firth. I probably won’t be able to go until next week, so if anyone sees it in the meantime, do post your verdict.
